Did you know that Sri Lanka is home to a staggering 92 species of mammals, over 440 species of birds, 190 reptiles and that overall, about 22 percent of Sri Lanka’s amphibians, birds, mammals and reptiles and 27% of our flora and plants are endemic to the island?
The wildlife in Sri Lanka is as varied as the island itself. From elephants, sloth bears and leopards to reptiles and amphibians to birds and butterflies and more. Safari parks and wildlife sanctuaries, more often found in the southern and central zones of the island, offer the easiest way to experience a taste of Sri Lankan wildlife in their natural habitat. Yala National Park is the favored location for the seeing,witnessing and locating of a plethora of species. Stay alert for an exhilarating sighting of the leopard, most often seen at Yala, or witness the great elephant gathering in the Minneriya National Park during July to October.
